Don't Worry, Beach Happy

When you land in Sayulita, the first thing you will want to do is head to the beach!  Given how small the town is, you will be surprised to find that there are actually multiple beaches all within walking distance from the main plaza.  Each one offers something different, so here is a quick guide to get you oriented so you don't waste any precious vacation time lounging on the wrong beach, which would be such a shame!

Playa Sayulita

In what seems like a town of just 4 streets, all roads truly lead to the beach.  Playa Sayulita is a natural extension of the town and the main hub of activity.  Always busy, it is home to local surfers and tanning tourists.  There are plenty of restaurants on the main drag in addition to a few surf schools.  The consistent surf break is what attracted surfers to Sayulita many years ago and continues to make this the best place to take your first surf lesson.

Playa de los Muertos

Located a short walk to the south of town, Los Muertos is named for the cemetery you walk through to reach it.  Though it may sound sad, like all things in Mexico, even the cemetery is a bright and colorful place.  The beach is in a protected cove making it one of the safest places to swim.  You generally will not run into large crowds here so this was always my favorite beach to go for a morning swim and a fresh coconut!

Carricitos

Picture
You could easily mistake Carricitos for being a private, secluded beach.  On the far southern side of the peninsula, the beach is a 45 minute walk from town or a 10 minute golf cart ride.  Walking through a dense jungle, your first peak at the ocean is nothing short of magical.

Carricitos has strong waves, making it ideal for body surfing but not so ideal for children.  Even on a weekend, you will rarely find anyone else sharing the beach with you.  There is a beautiful estate on the beach but don't worry, as long as you stay off their loungers, you are totally okay to spend the day here.

North Sayulita

Picture
If you head north across the river that runs past Sayulita’s main beach, you will find the beautiful stretch of North Sayulita.  It is wonderfully maintained with far less beachcombers than you will find closer to town.  The waves are a bit rougher here so it makes for a better destination for sunbathing than swimming.  The sunsets are the most beautiful around, so I suggest you grab a drink and finish your day here.

Litibu

A beautiful, white sand beach that will make you think you are in the Caribbean.  Close to a mile long on the bay north of Punta Minta, it's a popular destination for surfers in the know.  A 20 minute drive from Sayulita, it makes for a perfect day trip when you just want to get away from the crowds.

Decisions, decisions...

Though it is hard to believe, I promise you that any beach you go near Sayulita will be great.  If you have a few days in the area than I highly encourage you test drive them all out and find the perfect fit for you!  Happy Beaching....
